Safety Calls Around Britain as Six Die In 24 Hours Due To Sea Related Incidents

UK Coastguard and Other Rescue Services Have Urged People To Be Aware Of The Dangers in Water and Changing Weather.

Sudden strong winds and high tides are presumed to be behind the tragic deaths of three men, two women and a boy in Cornwall, Aberdeen, Dorset, Essex and Jersey.

The UK Coastguard has been quick to call that people should be very cautious going around surging waves.

‘’Do listen to warnings and stay at a safe distance from the water,’’ said James Instance from the agency.

Last Friday afternoon the first incident unfolded when high waves knocked a family off rocks on a Cornish beach, sweeping them out to sea. Rudy and Lisinda Bruynius’s two sons had managed to scramble back on to rocks at South Fistral Beach and the couple with their daughter were rescued, but tragically the father Mr Bruynius died later in hospital with their daughter also in a critical condition, in which she recently passed away due to her injuries also.

At midday on Saturday, a windsurfer that was rescued after getting into trouble off the Essex coast later died in hospital.

Several hours later, a man had gone outside the safety zone at Sandbanks as winds picked up to gale force eight and catching him up in rough seas near Poole in Dorset.  Lifeguards went to rescue but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

In Aberdeen later that day, two brothers were swept away when paddling in the water in which their mother and others tried to save them, but then they too had to be rescued. Five where taken to hospital but the Mother, Julie Walker and her six-year-old son Lucas did not survive.

In the evening a sixth person lost their life off the Jersey coast, where a high tide and vicious winds made sea conditions treacherous.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency advises holidaymakers to:

• Stay away from areas where there are surging waves

• Be careful of tides – the agency says it is “easy to become cut off and strong wind conditions will mean that the sea will reach higher levels than expected”

• Heed warnings from lifeguards

It is really saddening to hear that in all these scenarios lives were lost.
