£1,000,000 Inshore and Inland Rescue Boat Grant

Since 2014, the inshore and inland rescue boat grant has issued funds to the U.K.’s water rescue charities in an effort to provide vital rescue boats and safety equipment.

Each year, as part of the initiative, funds are awarded to the U.K.’s coastal teams and water rescue charities to purchase new boats, life jackets, long reach poles and body hooks, helmets, boots and throw bags.

Spanning the length and breadth of the country, over 40 charities were awarded funds last year for new safety equipment. From Loch Lomond Rescue Charity in Scotland down to Exmouth Beach Rescue, the charities were awarded based on;

  • how the equipment listed supported or enhanced the organisation’s rescue capability
  • evidence that the items funded represented good value for money

Representatives from DEFRA, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, RNLI, the Royal Yachting Association and The Department for Transport chair a panel to oversee the appropriation of the funds and award it to areas most in need of vital equipment.

Sir Alan Massey, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, said:

“These smaller, independent charities are the lifeblood of our communities, playing a vital role in supporting the daily lives of thousands of people across the UK. We often need to remind ourselves that these brave women and men may be called at any time of the day or night to assist persons in difficulty. Those persons may be lost or injured, in trouble at sea, or needing to be rescued from fast-flowing water or floods. It’s essential that funding like this is available ton independent lifeboats so that they have the proper emergency equipment to aid in rescues. This funding will help meet their goals and ease their financial burden.”
