Newton Abbot River is Host of a Dramatic Rescue by Heroic Civilian

66-Year-Old man remains in a stable condition in hospital after he was heroically rescued from the River Lemon on Saturday.

A police spokesman on Sunday afternoon said that the 66-year-old man remained in stable condition at Torbay Hospital having suffered potentially serious injuries.

Terry Wotton clambered down into the icy water and kept the victims head above water level to ensure he wouldn’t drown. Terry stayed with the man for around 20 minutes before any emergency services came to assist and he has been praised by fire crews who stated that his quick actions had most definitely saved the pensioners life.

Terry, who served with the Royal Army Tank Regiment has said his family had just parked in the Bradley Lane car park to go off shopping when his military training triggered and he instinctively did what he could to save the man’s life.

"The water was freezing. They came in about 15 to 20 minutes. I was only in my trainers, jeans etc as I was just going into town."

“He didn’t regain consciousness while I was there. He was looking a bit pale but when I lifted him out he regained some colour” Terry said.

"The guy who went into the river undoubtedly saved the chap’s life."
